New CEO for ALA in Washington and Region
Renee Klein is the new President & CEO of the American Lung Association Mountain Pacific region which includes Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Wyoming. Most recently Klein served as Executive Director for Highline Medical Center Foundation. She’s worked with some of the largest nonprofit organizations in the Northwest and has considerable government relations and public affairs experience. Klein takes the reins on July 1.

Children with Asthma at Greater Risk from H1N1
Children with asthma are at greater risk to develop serious symptoms from H1N1 (swine) flu than from seasonal flu, according to a new study. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a new Canadian study found that children hospitalized with H1N1 were more likely to have asthma (22%) compared to children hospitalized with seasonal flu (6%). However, severity of asthma did not seem to affect risk for H1N1.

Returning to the school environment always poses challenges to kids with asthma. Children with asthma are at greater risk from influenza, and this year, the presence of H1N1 virus (swine flu) and regular seasonal flu mean the need to prepare is even greater. 2009 Climb for Clean Air a Success
The 21st annual Climb for Clean Air wrapped up July 26 to outstanding success. Over $115,000 was raised which will support American Lung Association efforts to combat air pollution, promote tobacco prevention among teens and find a cure for lung disease. Twelve of the twenty-one climbers successfully reached the summit of the 14,410 foot Mt. Rainier.
Historic Tobacco Bill Signed by President Obama
On June 22, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, granting the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory power over the manufacture, sale and marketing of tobacco products.
